Dîner en Blanc – Philadelphia

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

White is my favorite color to wear and it was magical to be surrounded by 4000 dinner guests clad in head-to-toe white at Philadelphia’s most anticipated, Dîner en Blanc. Last year, rumors swirled that the “secret location” was leaked on various forums so this year I searched for the location the day before the event and found it. Google, you are always there for me. With a event of this magnitude, I imagine it would probably be nearly impossible to keep everyone tight lipped.

While this white pop up dinner party seems effortless and glamorous, I would caution those who do not like to plan ahead that this may not be the event for you. Registration is months in advance and the wait list has a slim chance of receiving an invitation. Registering in phase I (out of three phases), I spent 40 minutes waiting in an online queue because the site hiccuped a couple times causing me to lose my place in line. The end game is very well worth it, proven by the growing wait list numbers each year (about 25,000 this year).

While my favorite venue so far is still Broad Street, I can’t wait to see what is in store for next year.

Fête en Blanc vs Dîner en Blanc

Having attended both Fete en Blanc in Lancaster, Pa and Diner en Blanc in Philadelphia, I thought I would list some differences I noticed. The photos in this post are from Fete en Blanc 2015 held in the Clipper Magazine Stadium.

1. Of course the Lancaster Fete en Blanc was much smaller. I can’t wait to see it grow.

2. At Diner en Blanc, everyone met up in different locations around Philly and walked/took the subway, to the meeting location. It was really difficult carrying everything up steps, down steps, and on the subway. At Fete en Blanc, we didn’t have to carry our tables, chairs, etc too far.

3. Since Philadelphia has such beautiful architecture, Diner en Blanc felt more magical and grand, although having a dinner party on a baseball field in Lancaster was pretty cool.

4. Diner en Blanc passed out sparklers while Fete en Blanc did not, because of open flame restrictions of the baseball field.

I thoroughly enjoyed both events and the hard work that goes into organizing them.

Philadelphia Flower Show & Photo Gallery 2

Hello lovelies,

Here is another gallery of the 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show. There was a butterfly experience offered where we fed butterflies. I expected the “experience” to feel like a fairy tale, similar to the butterfly house I had been to in Florida where the butterflies flew around you while you walked down a pretty trail. Instead it was a large netted area where the butterflies liked to rest on the net ceiling where it was a little difficult for petite sized me to reach them. However, for $3, it was worth it. The flower vendors had very good prices and a nice selection of flowers! The parking and food were ridiculously expensive so I don’t think we will be back for a couple of years.

Paris & Shopping

Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, and Dior in Paris

Hello darlings,

It’s time to share my lovely shopping experience in Paris. I had a lot of preconceptions about shopping overseas. I planned to go and buy a ton of well priced unique clothing items and come back with a European wardrobe. The joke was on me. Along Champs Elysees, excluding high end stores, I saw the mostly the same brands we had at home at higher price points. Cheaper prices could be found in lower quality boutiques but I’m not into low quality, especially when suitcase room was preciously limited. I’m sure there were gems that I missed in the city but I had limited time to search (for deals) and destroy (my budget).

So where would I go shopping in Paris? The little flea markets of course, and Chanel. Let’s be honest. I blew most of my shopping budget at Chanel. I’ve always wanted a Chanel purse but I don’t live in an area where I can just go and look at a wide selection of Chanel purses. We spent four magical hours in the store, looking at jewelry, sunglasses, bags and scarves. The associate that helped me was super darling and gorgeous. I walked out with my first Chanel, and two pairs of earrings. Success!

Where I live, flea markets are only open maybe once or twice a week, but Paris had several flea markets open every day of the week. I was advised by a Parisian friend that the best flea markets are in Paris and the ones outside are mostly junk.

It is my recommendation that you learn some basic French before you travel only because it definitely made my time in Paris easier and more comfortable. Being typical me, I got lost on the way to the markets and had to ask several people the name of the street and market I wanted to go to. I went into a Gap store and none of the employees knew. I was only maybe four blocks away! I went outside a stared at the map directory on the corner of the street. I heard a voice behind me asking if I was lost. I turned around and found a kind old man asked me if I needed help. I told him where I was looking for the market. After he corrected me on the words I mispronounced and we practiced the name of the street I was trying to find, he gave me instructions and had me repeat them back to him. Luckily, I speak a little French because he spoke no English! It’s true. The French care about their language and culture, and protect it fervently. I rarely felt like anyone was being rude or snobby as the stereotype suggest, it was more to me like a parent correcting a child because they want the best for him/her.

I got lucky at the markets and picked up a couple treasures including a leather purse for about $20 USD, a Christian Dior dress $100 USD, and a Longchamp Le Pliage red backpack $20 USD. I checked to make sure the Longchamp was authentic by comparing it to the one I happened to be carrying along. While my girlfriend I was traveling with sifted through pretty jewelry stands, I used my limited French to haggle successfully. I asked for money off the purse because it was my first time in Paris, I asked for money off the dress because it was raining, and I asked for money off the backpack and a young man came to my rescue saying give it to her, its just a plastic bag! He was right, nylon is plastic! So I chimed in “C’est plastique! C’est plastique!”. I came back to my friend who was still browsing jewelry. She whispered to me that the eager young stall owner kept running up to her and suggesting the ugliest pieces and she kept having to tell him no. On queue, he comes up and and shows her ugly earrings. We giggle and politely decline and he rang her up for the pretty pieces she picked out, a couple delicate silver rings.

Below is a photo of the duck from Le Campanella restaurant. The service was excellent, very American friendly, and it quickly became our favorite place to grab dinner. The food was amazing and I swear french fries taste different in France. French fries are one of my favorite foods, and after having really delicious fries in Paris, I came home, ate fries and thought they tasted very sub par. Thanks for ruining the ability to eat my favorite food in my own country Paris.

Happy shopping,

Vietnam – Ha Long Bay

IMG_1164

Introduction

In December I visited Vietnam for the first time in my life. It was also the first time my parents had been back in about 30 years. It was a multifaceted emotional experience for everyone. When we arrived, my dad spent days searching for his friend and the first thing said to my dad was “I can’t believe it is you, I thought you were dead.” My heart sank down to my stomach thinking about how children were sent away by their parents in hopes of better opportunities. Imagine all of your friends suddenly scattering and not knowing who survived and who did not. My mother (18) was sent away with her 12 year old sister with a bunch of gold rings to sell each time they were low on cash. My dad escaped a prisoner of war camp only to live in and travel through the Cambodian jungle, meeting and escaping child soldiers he met along the way. They were considered the lucky ones. I feel guilty sometimes about how easy my life is in comparison. We spent the rest of that day walking around my Dad’s hometown noting every building that has changed and hearing stories of his childhood.

Ha Long Bay

Being a really expensive trip, we packed as much as we could into our three week stay. We used the Sinh Tourist travel agency, the most trusted and popular travel agency in Vietnam. What does that mean in a country where business seems to be loosely regulated? A lot of fraud. Many travel agencies have adopted the Sinh Tourist name, and mimicked the office storefront and website design. As we were walking in search of the Sinh Tourist, we walked into a fake travel agency on the same street as the real agency that looked exactly like the real storefront! The only way to make sure you are not using a fake agency is to visit the website linked above and make sure you ONLY use the addresses listed. Any other locations (and there are a lot) are fraudulent, hoping to attract people using the great reputation of the internationally renowned Sinh Tourist.

We chose an eight day tour flying up and down the coast visiting, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi, and Ha Long Bay. Ha Long Bay was the most breathtaking thing I’ve ever seen, aside from seeing Beethoven’s messy manuscripts in the British Library, my first and only fan girl moment when I thought I was going to pass out. I always thought fan girls were faking it, but the inability to breathe I found out was very real. Included in our tour was a two day peaceful cruise with meals, kayaking, cave and beach visits included. We spent two magical days sailing in and out through the seemingly endless limestone karsts. If you could only see one thing in Vietnam, this would be it. All pictures in this post are from Ha Long Bay. I took about 500 pictures. Here are 5 of them :) I haven’t even shown you the caves yet!

Lastly, for anyone suffering from motion sickness, Bonine (Meclizine) is an excellent aid which allowed me to survive the plane ride and the cruise. I have to try it out at an amusement park now. No more being the girl that holds everybody’s stuff as they go on rides!

Happy traveling,

&annabelle xx

Travel Tips: Paris

Luck Favors the Prepared
There were a couple things about Paris that I didn’t expect, even though I probably should have. It’s just that traveling to Europe is so romanticized that it is hard to imagine anything than the dreamy architecture, art, and flaky pastries.

Scams
Paris is a very touristy location. Many tourists, also means many scams. Scam artists would open up with the line “Do you speak English?” which was the perfect opening line after days of hearing only French brings a rush of relief, comfort, and familiarity. We were asked us at least a couple times a day asking to sign a petition after which were asked to donate to “unicef” or “deaf blind children”. Parisian police are aware but can’t really do anything about it so if they see it happening they just tell the scammers to leave.

Pickpocketing
Off the Eurostar from London, my travel partner got pick pocketed in the Metro (subway)! We suspect someone was watching us as we were in line to pay for train tickets so they would know where we kept our wallets. The most surprising (and sad) thing is that the pick pocketer was a little girl. That is probably the reason why our guard was down. That being said, my travel partner had an open top purse and did not take care to hold her purse closely in crowded areas as is recommended by signs everywhere. I had my Longchamp bag which I kept zippered and close to me in crowded places and I had no problems.

Hopefully these tips will help you be prepared for your visit so that you can better enjoy your trip. Happy travels! xx

Travel Tips: The Louvre

Paris, France

A visit to the Louvre was a perfect activity for a rainy day in Paris. Plan your visit for a time when you think there will not be large crowds. It is also a good idea to map out your visit ahead of time. Look up the art pieces online that you want to see and head straight to those pieces first to make sure you don’t miss them. The information desk has maps in several different languages to help you get around. There can be large crowds around the more famous pieces. The Louvre can be quite overwhelming and most likely you will not be able to appreciate every piece in one day.

I chose several pieces that I really wanted to see (Mona Lisa, Starry Night Over the Rhone, and Venus de Milo being the big ones). The Mona Lisa was tiny compared to what I expected!

IMG_5316

Before I had seen any famous paintings in person, I would have never believed that I would enjoy them this much. My favorite genre is impressionism. In person, paintings take on a whole new personality that you can not get from photos. Don’t use photos as judgement of whether you want to go see a statue or painting, go see it in person! You can compare it to seeing online photographs of a person, and actually meeting a person: two completely different things. I took pictures for the memories but there is nothing like being present and taking it all in.

Along with the gorgeous art pieces, the Louvre itself is beautifully designed. It is hard to believe the Louvre building was once abandoned. Don’t forget to peek outside the windows too, as they offer beautiful views of the courtyard.

With all that being said, the Louvre was my second favorite museum in Paris. Musee d’Orsay being first and Musee d’Orangerie being third.

Don’t forget to check out the selfie statue. Beyonce is such a copycat ;)
