Artisan Feature: 40th Parallel Leather Goods

DSC_0443

DSC_0471

Would you believe me if I told you this gorgeous parachute bag was designed and handcrafted in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania? Sometimes we are mislead into thinking that we need to travel to experience history.

On a visit to 40th Parallel Leather Goods studio, I had the pleasure of meeting Laurie and Peter Eaton and found that not only are their goods amazing, but they weave their family history right into their products. Being a 2-person quintessential small business team, Laurie and Peter design and craft all of their products by hand. The parachute bag pictured above is one of my favorites from their collection. The bag design was inspired by Laurie’s father, Stan who was a member of the 11th Airbourne Division, 127th Airbourne Engineering Battalion, honoring his WWII journey from Fishtown, Philadelphia, to Japan.

Lovingly held together with copper and brass fittings and fasteners, this bag is made from rare North American moose hide leather which is becoming nearly impossible to obtain. It looks like a duffle on one side but has padded straps to allow the bag to function as a backpack, which makes the bag so comfortable to carry. No one appreciates a duffle with straps that dig into the shoulders, am I right? Being so spacious, there is room to fit so much in here; travel or camping items, school supplies, thanksgiving leftovers… Kidding… I ate them all :)

Thanksgiving has come and gone but I’m reminded to give thanks to our brave men and women who serve; past, present and future.

I’m so honored to photograph fine products from local artisans! Discover more 40th parallel products at http://www.40th-parallel.com or pop into Madcap & Co. in downtown Lancaster, PA.

Lilly Pulitzer Warehouse Sale 2015 Review and Musings

Feeling brave from my encounter with Lilly for Target, I embarked on the journey to my first Lilly Pulitzer warehouse sale. Follow my timeline below for a peek into the warehouse sale through the eyes of a first-timer.

WED

10:00 PM: Leave for the Expo Center. Go through a mental checklist of things I meant to bring (snacks, blankets, chargers, chairs….etc.). Eat half of the snacks before we get there.

11:20 PM: Arrive and find out the line is wrapped around the back of the building! Luckily our parking space was next to our spot in line so we can back up our car and sit inside of the car instead of outside.

12:00 AM: The anticipation is bubbling through everyone and I know sleep would be a smart decision but I couldn’t sleep. I open the car window and eavesdrop on everyone around me, trying to pick up tips or hints.

1:30 AM: Everyone is getting tired and less talkative. I try to sleep unsuccessfully. J is snoring next to me. He’s so lucky.

3:00 AM: I’m still awake but getting drowsy. People start frantically packing up stuff and a girl in line said that people are going to run soon. Run? We’re on the complete opposite side of the entrance! I should have taken my cardio more seriously. J throws our chairs in the car and I open the passenger door to get my wallet. I close the door with my phone locked inside and J is gone. So sleepy and confused, I just stand there and watch 30 people run ahead of our rightful place in line. I can’t leave the car without my phone because I’m scared of not being able to find J. J comes back and we make a run for it. I told him to outrun all the girls and I’ll meet him.

4:00 AM: We stood in line for almost three hours. It’s not so bad because they have an organized line system that keeps everyone semi moving. The line wraps around the building and it is hard to see how many people exactly are in front of you, which keeps morale up. The DJ starts playing and it feels like an alternative universe since I’m so deprived of sleep. Am I at a party? Some people are dancing, some people are trying to cut the line, and some people behind me can not stop bumping me and have no sense of personal space…

6:30 AM: The line starts really moving and I edge the rope barricade back so I can peek through the curtains in hopes of scoping out the set up of the room to make a game plan. I got about a three second glimpse at the room. It is way too big and busy to be able to tell what is where and the curtains are right next to the cashiers who all glare at me because I so obviously lifted the curtain. We finally enter! They give cute HUGE shopping bags you can use to shop.

6:45 AM: Okay this is much different than Lilly for Target. There is way too much merchandise for anyone to take it all. Relax. The prices are almost comparable to the sales Lilly has in store, the difference is that there is a much better selection, so I am much more likely to find something I like.

7:30 AM J and I meet up and he waits in line with me for the dressing room. We have two shopping bags filled to the brim and there is no way I could carry both by myself. The dressing room is a curtained area lined with cheap full length mirrors. The mirrors are narrow and it is hard to see yourself. The wait time for the dressing room is pretty long because everyone has 30+ things to try on. I share a mirror with a girl and her mom because there are just too many people. I watch people who are my size and when they put cute things back, I snatch them. Outside the fitting room, J is texting me since he has figured out that pink tags means the item is a sample (or a damage). He is collecting the “rare items” while I am trying on all my things. I realize samples are much cheaper which is why they are the treasure of this sale!

8:00 AM: We meet again and he has a bunch of samples to show me. I am so jealous he is so good at finding samples. I only found two. We go through our bags and figure out what we want to keep while people come up and think our table is a sale table. Sorry, these items are mine :)

9:00 AM: We check out and see the line is just as long as when we started. We feel accomplished and experienced.

Stay tuned for future posts on my findings including price points.

Love and Lilly,

Bridal Shower Invitations

IMG_2866-1

I am so pleased to share with you these bridal shower invitations I designed for my beautiful bride-to-be. The rose pattern is hand painted watercolor and the black and white striped pattern was requested by the bride.  My favorite thing about these invitations is the striped belly band ties the invitation to the envelope liner beautifully. The best thing is that the belly bands were an accident. They were the result of me missing some information on the invitation so I added the bands to attach the additional information. Here’s to perseverance and happy accidents! Love, andannabelle xx

Calligraphy Class by Lauren Essl & Blue Eye Brown Eye

IMG_2687-1

After stalking the adorable hand lettering of Lauren Essl (and her company Blue Eye Brown Eye) with my bestie for about a year, our dreams of taking a class became reality at Winifred Paper in DC. I purchased one class for myself, and one class for my bride-to-be as a gift, just in time to address all of her wedding invitations! At first, I felt the pricing of the classes were a little high, but after taking the class, I believe the pricing was more than fair. Within the first ten minutes I felt like I got my money’s worth.

About a year before I found this calligraphy class, I had purchased inks, paper, nibs, and instruction books, none of which really helped me get started in calligraphy. My paper caused my ink to bleed, my nibs ripped my paper, and I had no idea how to hold the scary oblique pen. I probably wasted over $100 on supplies I didn’t know how to use (another reason why this class was worth the money). On that note, in an age of googling and youtube-ing, I have found there is an extent to what I can learn on my own. There comes a moment when having a hands on instructor is the way to go. Cue being sad about how apprenticeship isn’t as popular as it used to be.

Things I loved:

Convenience: Everything needed was provided including some cute extras. Receiving materials in class felt like Christmas! There was no running around like a chicken with my head cut off looking for supplies. Having the right materials for calligraphy is everything.

Friendly (and ADORABLE) Learning Environment: Lauren was a gem of a teacher and cultivated an environment where questions were welcomed and well answered. A lot of tips were provided that I feel will make all the difference in my work. Look below at my lovely work station! How could I not produce beautiful work in such a beautiful environment?

IMG_2688-1

Suggestions: I LOVE the information sheet received listing Lauren’s favorite calligraphy products since there are so many products out on the market. I think it would be super cool for the advanced courses to offer some sort of optional order form that lists materials mentioned in the beginners class (gold ink or specific paper, etc) for students to order and pay for, in addition to the class fee. I would totally pay extra to try out new inks and supplies, and the convenience of receiving it in class would be invaluable.

Thank you for a great time Kelly, Lauren and Anna!

Lilly for Target 2015 & The Preppy Hunger Games

IMG_2603

This weekend, J and I braved Target for the release of their latest collaboration with Lilly Pulitzer. We waited in line and rushed in with about 70 others at 8 AM to grab what we could. It is humorous now to think that J and I spent time going over the item preview to scope out the things we really wanted. The reality was we had to grab everything within reaching distance because twenty arms around you were doing the same and everything was gone in a matter of minutes.

There were crazies who tried to grab the items right out of your hands, and others who thought it was their right to tell you that you needed to give them the item because you have enough or that it was against the rules to buy too many things (lies!). The target I went to did limit customers to 2 of the same item. The items seem to be standard Target quality and if you expected Lilly Pulitzer quality for Target prices then you are silly! For those of you that might be tempted by the eBay marked up prices, you can get real Lilly on sale for about the same price.

Below is a list of things I have and a list of things I really wanted but was unable to obtain. I am interested in trading for retail price plus shipping only! If I haven’t listed something you wanted but you have one of the items on my coveted search list, email me (hello@andannabelle.com) or shoot me a message on my instagram @andannabelle and I might be willing to trade it if I have it.

Up for Trade:

Fringe Scarf – Happy Place

iPhone 6 Plus – Sea Urchin For You

Valet Makeup Bag – My Fans

Round Top Clutch – Upstream

Shift Dress (childrens size XL) – Fan Dance

Pom Shorts – Happy Place XS

Eyelet White Tank Top (childrens size XL)

Flip Flops (size 7) – My Fans

Assorted Wristlets

In search of:

Shift Dresses (Women Size 0 or 2)

Ceramic Mug Set

Basket

Twist Bandeau Bikini Top (XS) – Fan Dance

Pom Napkin Set

Halter Top (S) – Pineapple Punch

Pom Shorts (XS) – Upstream

Beach Chair

Porcelain Plate Set

Despite all the commotion and complaints J and I had a really good time and surprisingly he LOVED the adrenaline rush and sense of accomplishment that came with obtaining items we had hoped for. How cute and supportive he is and how lucky I am!

Love and Lilly,

&annabelle

Paris & Shopping

IMG_1727

Givenchy, Jimmy Choo, and Dior in Paris

Hello darlings,

It’s time to share my lovely shopping experience in Paris. I had a lot of preconceptions about shopping overseas. I planned to go and buy a ton of well priced unique clothing items and come back with a European wardrobe. The joke was on me. Along Champs Elysees, excluding high end stores, I saw the mostly the same brands we had at home at higher price points. Cheaper prices could be found in lower quality boutiques but I’m not into low quality, especially when suitcase room was preciously limited. I’m sure there were gems that I missed in the city but I had limited time to search (for deals) and destroy (my budget).

So where would I go shopping in Paris? The little flea markets of course, and Chanel. Let’s be honest. I blew most of my shopping budget at Chanel. I’ve always wanted a Chanel purse but I don’t live in an area where I can just go and look at a wide selection of Chanel purses. We spent four magical hours in the store, looking at jewelry, sunglasses, bags and scarves. The associate that helped me was super darling and gorgeous. I walked out with my first Chanel, and two pairs of earrings. Success!

Where I live, flea markets are only open maybe once or twice a week, but Paris had several flea markets open every day of the week. I was advised by a Parisian friend that the best flea markets are in Paris and the ones outside are mostly junk.

It is my recommendation that you learn some basic French before you travel only because it definitely made my time in Paris easier and more comfortable. Being typical me, I got lost on the way to the markets and had to ask several people the name of the street and market I wanted to go to. I went into a Gap store and none of the employees knew. I was only maybe four blocks away! I went outside a stared at the map directory on the corner of the street. I heard a voice behind me asking if I was lost. I turned around and found a kind old man asked me if I needed help. I told him where I was looking for the market. After he corrected me on the words I mispronounced and we practiced the name of the street I was trying to find, he gave me instructions and had me repeat them back to him. Luckily, I speak a little French because he spoke no English! It’s true. The French care about their language and culture, and protect it fervently. I rarely felt like anyone was being rude or snobby as the stereotype suggest, it was more to me like a parent correcting a child because they want the best for him/her.

I got lucky at the markets and picked up a couple treasures including a leather purse for about $20 USD, a Christian Dior dress $100 USD, and a Longchamp Le Pliage red backpack $20 USD. I checked to make sure the Longchamp was authentic by comparing it to the one I happened to be carrying along. While my girlfriend I was traveling with sifted through pretty jewelry stands, I used my limited French to haggle successfully. I asked for money off the purse because it was my first time in Paris, I asked for money off the dress because it was raining, and I asked for money off the backpack and a young man came to my rescue saying give it to her, its just a plastic bag! He was right, nylon is plastic! So I chimed in “C’est plastique! C’est plastique!”. I came back to my friend who was still browsing jewelry. She whispered to me that the eager young stall owner kept running up to her and suggesting the ugliest pieces and she kept having to tell him no. On queue, he comes up and and shows her ugly earrings. We giggle and politely decline and he rang her up for the pretty pieces she picked out, a couple delicate silver rings.

Below is a photo of the duck from Le Campanella restaurant. The service was excellent, very American friendly, and it quickly became our favorite place to grab dinner. The food was amazing and I swear french fries taste different in France. French fries are one of my favorite foods, and after having really delicious fries in Paris, I came home, ate fries and thought they tasted very sub par. Thanks for ruining the ability to eat my favorite food in my own country Paris.

Happy shopping,

Paper Crown & Rifle Paper Co Collaboration

IMG_1711

I’m loving Paper Crown’s new collaboration with RIFLE PAPER Co. Pictured above is the clear peach blossom iPhone 6 plus case ($36) on my pretty gold phone. My friend also ordered the iPhone 6 case for her phone. The print is the same for both case sizes and not scaled down. The floral print is gorgeous in person. Sometimes with collaborations or upscale brands, you purchase it for the branding and the quality is disappointing. That is not the case with this collaboration. The craftsmanship is beautiful and the case protects the phone well while having a sleek thin build. I’m looking forward to seeing the spring clothing collection!

This pretty floral case is my cup of tea!

Tory Burch & The Evie Long Pearl Necklace

Tory Burch Evie Long Pearl Necklace

J. Crew Factory Gold and Crystal Link Bracelet

Tiffany Victoria Cat Eye Sunglasses

It absolutely thrills me when my bf picks out clothing or jewelry for me. He always choses things I love but would never have picked out for myself, which gives me variety. Usually I am the type of girl who buys the same types of things over and over again and if I really like something, I buy it in every color. We were shopping on V-Day and came across this classic beauty. A luxurious long strand of pearls adorned with 16K gold Tory Burch emblems. Keep it as a long strand or double it up for a different look. Here I used my pearls to compliment a nautical look complete with stripes and a link bracelet.

Zoya Nail Polish – Pandora

On the way home without any prompting from me, he looked up several different matching earring options for me and shows me his favorite (Tory Burch Pearl Drop Earrings). I don’t think I could have found a more perfect man.

Happy accessorizing!

Zara – Blanket Scarf

Zara Blanket Scarf (sold out) similar

Ray Ban Wayfarer

J. Crew Factory Gold and Crystal Link Bracelet

This year I discovered the blanket scarf. Blanket scarves are ridiculously huge and ridiculously warm. It has come to rescue so many times and in extreme circumstances I just open it up and use it as a blanket. It is definitely worth having coworkers asking me if I am wearing a blanket around the office. Some people just don’t understand how great it is when fashion meets function.
