Ikea Hack: Malm Occasional Table

IMG_1376

So I fell in love with an Ikea table ($129) but unfortunately (or fortunately) it was out of stock. I googled it to see if by chance I could get it from maybe eBay or another source. Through my google search, I found that many people had made their own occasional table for a fraction of the price. Lured by cost savings, I roped my boyfriend and Toby (my yorkie) into helping me build the perfect table. My table ended up costing roughly $60 with all supplies from Home Depot (bless their friendly and helpful hearts). It is a pretty sweet table to go at the foot of your bed, with wheels to slide up and down the length of your bed so perfect for a laptop, some reading material, or a hot cup of tea. Basically all we had to do was choose our wood (we chose pre-sanded and pre-primed to save time), cut three pieces, attach the wood pieces together with L brackets, and attach wheels. The project became especially easy after we figured out the drill has two directions and one of the directions won’t screw the nail into the wood. Don’t judge! It was our first experience with power tools. The table is so gorgeous but the most rewarding thing was that we made it with our own hands (and paws). Spending our day getting down and dirty with a power drill and a hammer was pretty fun.

Happy DIY-ing!

Head over to instagram.com/quinn.luu for my inspiration and to peek at the real ikea table.
